Filona’s Letters

Saturday, July 13, 1957

Dear Joseph William McKennely,

My name is Filona Pyrochurn, and my green grocer Frank Coloin gave me your information saying that you wanted a pen pal.

What are your hobbies? I like to play and care for my pet lynx (Pepper), do archery, make potions (they aren’t real potions or anything, I just make them for fun), do woodworking with my mom, and play with Frank’s son Peter. I have a little sister named Norim, and she often plays with us also. Do you have any siblings?
How old are you, and what do you want to be when you grow up? I am 16, and want to be a wood worker when I grow up. I often help my mom when she does wood working projects. When I was little, I wanted to be a coyote, but now I know that isn’t possible. Wouldn’t it be cool to be an animal though?!

My Lynx and I often go out into the Rocky mountains (Penapa is a small city inside them) to do archery. She usually stands beside me when I shoot, and then when I run out of arrows, she and I go and retrieve them. I have gotten very good at archery. My dad helped me make my own bow and arrows for my 14th birthday, and I have been practicing most days since then. Norim is turning 14 this year, and my dad is going to help her make a set on her birthday as well.

Are you currently in the middle of a book? I am currently in the middle of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I am enjoying it so far. Have you read it?

I hope this letter gets to you all right, letters sometimes get lost when they go out of town.

Filona Pyrochurn
