I got to visit the Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience a few weeks ago. The awesome exhibit is onboard the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City and will be there through the end of October. I think the Star Trek exhibit was really cool because there were lots of fun action games and really cool quizzes, not just videos to watch.  The quizzes were hard unless you know a lot of Star Trek but the games were amazing and you didn’t need to be a Star Trek expert.

When you start at the Starfleet Academy they give you a wristband to track how good you are.  My favorite was taking all the tests to see if you can be a cadet and go to the Starfleet Academy.  I really liked that I could pretend I was one of the crew and try out for each department.  For example, if I was the medical person I could run tests with a scanner to find out what was wrong with the body parts of the crew.  You have to search their whole body to find out what is wrong and if you are having troubles, it gives you clues.  You have to figure out the problem before time runs out… I was not the one you want to be in the medical team.

I did best in navigation! When I was the navigator you get a ship with limited fuel to do a timed trial to see if I could get to the destination.  It was like a puzzle to find your way, just like if you were navigating. There were obstacles around the planets you could get sucked into if you were not careful and it made you lose time and fuel. After you get sucked in, if you touch the planet, it will send you back out to keep going in the game. It is best to figure out the shortest way to win the game.

There were many exhibits and my other favorite was teleportation! You stand in a box with 2 open doors and a camera that shows you in a teleportation tube from the movies.  It makes you feel like you were being teleported to someplace else, which is my dream.

One of the last areas was to see if I could be a Commander!  You are in a room modeled like a ship and sit in a chair with a screen. Your job is to fight the enemy and make the decisions! I liked it because you learned the best ways to defend yourself and also attack enemies.  It was really hard, I was not that good, but it was the most fun.

If you are lucky enough to visit the Intrepid and the “Starfleet Academy Experience” I think you will really enjoy it. You can either buy tickets at the museum or ahead of time online at www.intrepidmuseum.org/Startrek.
